WARNING:
Charcoal foundries can reach temperatures in excess of 1,000ºC, which is well above the melting point of hobbyists. This project should only be attempted with adequate knowledge and training, proper protective safety gear, and in a fire resistant area with adequate ventilation. The sparks flying from the foundry can ignite fires, and the fumes from burning dross can be toxic. Use caution and common sense. Use of this video content is at your own risk.

Project Inspired By:
This foundry is an original design, which comes after months of experimenting, and over 10 different prototypes. The functionality is founded on ideas I collected while searching the internet for different furnace designs.
Project History & More Info:
For this project I experimented with 10 different prototypes, to develop a reusable backyard foundry that melts aluminum soda cans easily and safely. I tested different refractory recipes, different containers, different setting for blowing air, and different types of makeshift crucibles.
I tried various ratios of portland cement, sand, perlite, plaster of paris, water, and even kitty litter. For containers, I experimented with clay pots, plastic buckets, no container, cinderblocks, and a galvanized steel pail.
I ended up favoring the galvanized steel pail, and a mix of 50% plaster of paris, and 50% play sand, by volume, which was inspired by a video by NightHawkInLight “How to Make a Soup Can Forge” http://bit.ly/IBSoupCanForge
Depending on where you get, or find, your materials the cost can range anywhere from $5-$25 per unit. With the materials I used, I was able to make 2 units for under $40 ($20 each). Even on the high end, this is probably one of the cheapest, reliable, backyard foundries that can be made.
I used mine to melt soda cans, and extract the aluminum for future metal casting projects. All the soda cans came from a local recycling depot. I bought back 30 lbs from the depot to avoid having to drink gallons and gallons of soda.
I stored the ingots in various forms, which you can see in the video”Melting Cans With The Mini Metal Foundry” https://goo.gl/pTP1uG
The technique for making the sword in that video, and the gun in this video is called “Lost Foam Casting” and will be demonstrated in a future project video.
Wooden Memory & Keepsake Boxes
Who makes the boxes?
Wooden memory keepsake puzzle boxes are handcrafted in Uruguay. These boxes are finely crafted by only one highly skilled master craftsman in Montevideo capital of Uruguay. The techniques used in Uruguay to make this boxes have only be used by one craftsman. He will pass to his son his secrets.
What about creating a box?
Before creating a new box, he first designs how the box mechanisms will work. He then select the wood to be used and let it dry for a time. After the wood has dried, he cut pieces and assemble the box. The finishing is made by hand to give them the final special rounded and shining touch. It takes about a month to finish them with the glamour they express.Since they are individually crafted, no two boxes are the same.
What are the Uruguayan boxes meant to be?
The are meant to be an enigma. Without experience they seem very difficult to open. Some boxes-parts move smoother than others. We try our best to give our impression on the smootness of movement for each box we sell. If the pieces are a little harder to move don’t force them, with a litlle bit of pacience you will be able to open them. But generally the seams are visible and the pieces move with ease. The interiors are nicely lined and have removeble trays.
If you are looking for apparently secret puzzle boxes of the finest quality and that offer a challenge. “Where to start?” “And how to get them together?”. You found the ideal place to purchase them.
What variety of woods do we offer?
South-America has an amazing variety of trees. Uruguayan puzzle boxes take advantage of these natural woods, colors and textures to produce there elaborate geometric patterns. Each box is finely handcrafted from native woods and finished as shown. Beautifull materials such as “grabillea, acacia negra, cerejeira, ligustro, itaúba, nogal, roble, agorrobo, olivo, olmo” used are crafted into these fun and eyecatching wooden boxes.
We also use recycled antique woods such as antique doors, train supporting-beams, ceiling-beams of antique houses or from construction. Also stationair wood from saw-mills very dry. These woods are difficult to find but sometimes there are opportunities.
How to qualify the difficulty?
The number of steps, necessary to open the box are an important factor. Usually, more steps denote a higher difficulty to open.
Level 1 : Easy
Level 2 : Moderately easy
Level 3 : Moderate
Level 4 : Medium
Level 5 : Difficult
Level 6 : Very difficult
